The Tripura government has decided to set up a well-equipped crime branch under the state police to deal with unlawful activities in the state such as drug and narcotics peddling. The decision was taken during the state’s cabinet meeting. Speaking on the same, the state’s Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the new wing will be modeled after Delhi Police’s crime branch. He said that the state cabinet has cleared a proposal to form a well-equipped police wing to arrest criminals in the state and restore the rule of the land.
The crime branch would seek to punish any miscreant, or anybody found having links with drug peddlers or mafia gangs. The branch would exclusively deal with crimes like drug peddling, indulging in social unrest and crimes on women. The main aim behind the move is to restore normalcy in the society. The two-hour-long cabinet meeting also sought a crackdown on illegal constructions across the state. The ruling dispensation has sought a report on government land allotment to political party offices in the state.

The state cabinet also agreed to extend the term of teachers engaged under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. The term of the teachers was scheduled to end after March 31. The minister said that the state will retain their service till the Centre agrees to provide funds.
